If the police or the FBI want to talk, say:

“I want to talk to a lawyer.”

Then quit talking.

I have been a criminal trial lawyer since 1989, in state and federal court across Texas.

Most of the time it is a bad idea to talk to the FBI or police agencies. What you say to law enforcement can and will be used against you.

Criminal law is different because what you say can hurt you. It is real evidence and it can be used to convict you in a court of law. That is why you should always use the words “I want to talk to a lawyer.” Then quit talking.

Criminal and civil law have some things in common. Your statements and communications can be used in civil and criminal situations. A lawyer can help you learn if you have criminal problems or civil issues to contend with.

Already charged? It’s not too late.

I’ve been a criminal trial lawyer since 1989. I have successfully defended murder, embezzlement, medical fraud, sexual assault, negligent homicide and drug conspiracy cases, among others.

Talking less and communicating less can be very helpful.

Calling about a husband, a son, a parent? Call me the same way.

  1. Don’t ignore it.

“Do not ignore a legal situation. It will not go away. Most of the time your legal position will get worse the longer you wait to get help.”

  2. Talk to a lawyer soon.

“In almost all cases, the sooner you talk to a lawyer, the better your position. Waiting can hurt your legal position.”

  3. It’s not too late.

“Even if you think it is too late, a good lawyer can improve your situation.”
